Independent ratings, built to be trusted.

SYNE Ratings exists so that ESG, sustainability and carbon claims can be checked against something more rigorous than a company's own disclosure - a rating that investors, regulators and exchanges can all rely on the same way.

Our story

Rating discipline, applied beyond credit.

Credit ratings gave capital markets a common language for financial risk. SYNE Ratings was built to do the same for ESG, sustainability and carbon performance - replacing self-reported claims with an independent, evidence-based score that means the same thing wherever it's used.

We work across three layers of the same problem: rating listed companies on ESG, rating unlisted companies and projects on sustainability and carbon credibility, and rating the credit-like risk that climate and non-financial factors introduce into portfolios. One methodology, applied consistently, licensed market by market.

Today that means operating as a licensed ratings and data provider across 71 countries, working with investors, banks, corporates, exchanges and regulators who need a rating they can act on rather than take on faith.

Trusted, transparent and regulated ratings.

What we stand for

Six commitments behind every rating.

These aren't slogans - they're the constraints our methodology and governance are built around.

Independence

No issuer pays for a better score. Analysts are insulated from commercial pressure by design, not just policy.

Rigour

Every rating is backed by verifiable data and, where relevant, primary evidence - not self-reported claims alone.

Transparency

Our methodology is published and explainable, not a black box you're asked to trust.

Comparability

One consistent framework across markets, sectors and asset classes, so scores mean the same thing everywhere.

Accountability

Ratings are reviewed and re-rated as new information comes in - they're a living signal, not a one-off stamp.

Global consistency

The same standards apply whether an issuer is being rated in Lagos, London or Jakarta.

How we work

How a rating gets made.

The same four stages apply whether we're rating a listed company, a private supplier or a carbon project.

1

Data collection

Public disclosures, primary data requests, site visits and third-party datasets are gathered against a fixed evidence checklist.

2

Review with SYNE AI and Human Intelligence

SYNE AI flags patterns and inconsistencies at scale, while sector-specific analysts apply the judgement the methodology can't automate.

3

Committee sign-off

An independent ratings committee - separate from the commercial team - reviews and validates the final score.

4

Ongoing monitoring

Ratings are revisited on a set cycle and re-opened early if material new information emerges.

Leadership

Led by people who've issued ratings - and been rated themselves.

Our leadership team has sat on both sides of the table: as credit analysts and raters, and as the market participants a rating actually gets issued to. Full profiles are on the leadership page.

Our culture

Rigour on the outside starts with rigour on the inside.

We hire and operate the way we rate: on evidence, not claims. Seven principles shape how we decide and work, day to day.

Risk appetite

Calculated risks to expand into new markets and asset classes - never in the integrity of a score.

Evidence over opinion

Analysts back opinions with data, not seniority or instinct.

Open and transparent

Disagreement is expected and welcomed, regardless of who's in the room.

Global outlook

We think and hire globally, applying one consistent standard everywhere.

Local implementation

Every rating reflects the market context and nuance a jurisdiction demands.

Ownership over hierarchy

Ownership of the work matters more than position on the org chart.

Trust and integrity

Every judgement call is underpinned by trust and integrity - with no exceptions.
